Ok so I know this is bronze, I know this has some real age and wear, and I know that this is modeled after ancestor figures from Papua New Guinea. I own two of these and I can’t find convincing comparables however. I bought these because I like them and I’m pretty well convinced of them having been handled quite a lot. Patina feels right, its substantial in the hand, and I do put a lot of value in that. I prefer items that I can convincingly make claims about based on tangible evidence but this is one of those weird ones that I’ll get kinda woo woo with and say it just fucking feels right. I’ve been putting a bit more stock into this as I continue this career. I don’t know if it’s like chess players where their playing adjusts from memorization to instinct over time or what. Sounds kinda douchey idk. But certain items of religious resonance do have this quality. I have discusses buddha statues at length with actual buddhists and asian art experts and an aesthetic serene quality is an important component in evaluating age and quality of effigies of buddha. So I still don’t believe in anything, and I will always value and choose empirical evidence, but more and more I value the feel of an object in its context and in handling it. Just this guy available, I’m keeping the other one. So deal with it or make me a ridiculous offer for both and I’ll listen but likely ignore.
